Nothing gives a room warmth and coherence like a fireplace. Once you have lived in a house with a fireplace, you will always associate fireplaces with warm feelings of home and family and friends. That’s why a house without a fireplace seems to lack a central focal point, the hearth--literally, the heart of the home. Even here in Florida, where fireplaces may not seem to fill a practical function, they are nevertheless beautiful and enjoyable, even when unlit.  And, where fireplaces are meant for ambiance only, the electric
fireplace fulfills that function admirably.

Another great benefit of fireplaces:They are an excellent investment. You can expect to get back an average of 200% or more on your fireplace investment when you sell your house. We hear it every day, “"The fireplace sold my house!"â€
Even home-buyers who did not have a fireplace in mind when they started looking for a new home, find that they are captivated by the fireplace and are driven to buy the house. Well, let’s face it-- "Everyone loves a fireplace!"
FACT: The National Assoc. of Real Estate Appraisers says that adding a fireplace increases a home's resale value by 6-12%. Therefore, on average, a
$500,000 home increases $30-60K
$750,000 home increases $45-90K
$1,000,000 home increases $60-120K
So, it's always a good idea to put in a fireplace, whether during construction or while remodeling.
Putting in a fireplace in new construction or during remodeling is a great idea, but we have options for existing homes, too. We can also take a tired, out-dated fireplace and turn it into a showpiece. Bring in your clippings or look through our catalogues and albums. We will work with you to create the fireplace you have always dreamed of! By the way, whether you put in a wood burning, gas or electric fireplace, the options for decorating the outside of the fireplace are the same. The very same from wood mantels or stone work that we use to finish a wood burning or gas fireplace can be used with an electric unit.Â
 Wood Burning Fireplaces
There is nothing like the look, feel, and smell of a real, wood burning fireplace. They're homey, they're fun, and--yes, you can roast marshmellows! And, oh, the smell of real wood burning! There's nothing like it.
Â
When it comes to wood burning fireplaces, we sell pre-fabricated zero-clearance fireplaces and we also build real masonry fireplaces. Of course, there's a cost factor to a hand-built masonry fireplace.Â
If you want to convert your existing wood burning fireplace to gas, a gas log set is all you need. Wood burning fireplaces always have a chimney that must ultimately vent skyward. In some states, like Florida, doors are required for energy conservation. Fireplace doors are always a good idea for this reason.
Gas Fireplaces
Â
There are several types of gas fireplaces. The first one is the one we just mentioned--a wood burning fireplace that has been converted to gas by the addition of a gas log set.Â
The second type of gas fireplaces is the direct vent (top or rear vented) fireplace. The direct vent fireplace is a sealed combustion unit which will only operate with the fixed glass panel in place.   It is the only type of gas fireplace allowed in sleeping areas or small rooms.
The third type of gas fireplace is ventless (or unvented or vent-free), and it requires no venting whatsoever. It can’t take glass doors, but we have a large selection of decorative screen doors can be added to give it the look of a finished fireplace. In fact, they are the very same custom doors that we use on wood burning fireplaces, but with fixed screening instead of glass.
Please note: All gas fireplaces and gas logs must be installed by a licensed gas installer who pulls a permit for the purpose. A gas unit that is not installed as such voids the manufacturer’s guarantee, our product liability, and your homeowner’s insurance coverage.Â

In many situations, the most practical, the most painless, and often, the most economical solution is the purely decorative electric fireplace. People who have not seen our electric fireplaces--which are state-of-the-art--can’t imagine how amazingly realistic these new units are.  Our electric units have fooled gas installers who were looking for the gas intake line!
At Fireplace & BBQ Design Center, we specialize in electric fireplace options. Not only do we have a wide variety of finished electric fireplaces with mantels, but, we can also take an electic unit and build it into the wall, or build a wall around it. Afterwards, you can decorate it as you would any other type of fireplace, with stone, wood, brick, etc. When it’s finished, it will look as if it was built with the house.

Fireplaces can be decorated in wood or stone. Please see our section on Custom Stonework for stone mantel options. Wood mantels come in many different styles and wood options. If you need a mantel for an existing fireplace, it is helpful if you bring in a drawing of the wall your fireplace is on---the dimensions of the fireplace opening, how far it is off the ground, the ceiling height, the distances to any windows or doors, and the dimensions of any existing facing materials.  We have many, many mantels in all price ranges and styles.

Glass doors give a finished look to the fireplace. They help regulate the temperature of the fire, keep ashes in their place, and keep children and small animals out of the fireplace. Glass doors can have optional child locks.
Also, in an older fireplace whose damper no longer works, glass doors can serve the same purpose as a damper in closing off outside air, and keep down energy costs when closed. In Florida and many other states, they are required by code for energy conservation.  In any case, if you have a wood burning fireplace with no glass door, your heating and air conditioning is escaping up the flue.
To fit a glass door, we need to know if your fireplace is a factory built (metal) unit inside the wall, or a masonry fireplace (hand-built with individually-grouted firebrick inside). We need the opening dimensions as well. Many fashionable metal choices are now available. In fact, your fireplace door can be a chic as your fireplace surround. Doors are also available with child locks to keep curious little hands out of the fireplace.
Gas log sets are available in many beautiful styles. The size of the gas log set appropriate for your fireplace depends upon the size of your fireplace opening and floor depth. A wood burning fireplace requires vented gas logs. Direct vent fireplaces come with the manufacturer’s set of gas logs. Unvented or vent-free gas logs can only go into a specially constructed unvented firebox. The type of gas used--propane or natural gas, must be specified.

Accessories provide the finishing touch to your fireplace. We suggest that, since you will be looking at them everyday, it's worth choosing something you really like and which truly represents your taste and style. I
It is helpful to know your fireplace opening when looking for a screen or grate.
